Michael Shalin, now Distinguished Associate Fellow at SUITS, has held many roles in the political and diplomatic arena, including as ambassador in Turkey/Azerbajdzan, Spain, former Yugoslavia/Macedonia, Norway and as Swedish Special Envoy for Sudan/South Sudan. In addition, he was the founder and first Director General of the Folke Bernadotte Academy - an agency under the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Michael Sahlin holds a PhD in Political Science from Uppsala University.

In recent years, after retirement from public office, he has mainly focused on writing and lecturing about Turkey's domestic and foreign affairs Turkey and Turkey as a US/NATO partner in the Middle East.

– I hope and believe that with my broad and varied background, serving as ambassador in Turkey and as an academic, I will contribute to the further build-up of SUITS as a center of excellence for Turkish studies in Sweden and internationally. My main focus will be on writing a series of policy study papers covering a range of important and relevant themes as keys to a deeper understanding of today's and yesterday's Turkey and its region. Hopefully it will be a stimuli for a more informed and analytical discussion about Turkey, says Michael Sahlin.

Director of SUITS, Dr. Paul T Levin welcomes the new recruitment.

– With his background as a trained academic that also has extensive experience from the field of diplomacy and foreign service, Ambassador Sahlin is a significant addition to the SUITS team. I am particularly happy because this means a strengthening of SUITS’ capacity to produce research and analysis that matters to the real world. And he has already contributed to a number of SUITS’ activities in the past, so it felt natural to ask him to join us on a more stable basis.
