The release of the English translation of Hans-Ingvar Roth’s book P. C. Chang and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 2018 will mark the 70th anniversary of the document, which has been called the “moral lingua franca” of the world.

In his visit to King’s College London, Prof Roth spoke about how the document was created by many different actors including Chinese diplomat Peng Chun Chang. P. C. Chang stressed religious neutrality, compassion and respect for human dignity. He drew on many different ethical traditions in his work, among them Confucian philosophy, and developed a “theory of intercultural ethics” that informed his work.

The English version of the book is forthcoming in 2018 from University of Pennsylvania Press.
